On the moon, a Russian robot will extract water to refuel rocket engines

Scientists of the Kurchatov Institute have developed a robot capable of extracting water from the soil of a natural satellite of the Earth, for its further use in the operation of lunar stations and as fuel for spacecraft engines.

The designers of the National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute” (KI) have patented their new invention – a robot that is capable of extracting water from the bowels of the moon. In the future, it will be possible to fill rocket engines, as well as provide lunar stations and other objects of human activity, RIA Novosti reports.

The surface of the natural satellite of the Earth is completely littered with various types of soil, including regolith and frozen pieces of ice that form a compacted crust. Almost all of these types of rocks can be used to extract water. However, until now in the world astronautics there were no projects of lunar rovers and other technical devices with a similar function.

The creation of a Russian robot opens up new opportunities in the exploration of not only the Moon itself, but also deeper space. Future lunar water intake stations will be able to refuel manned rockets with reusable nuclear engines, which will proceed to distant planets – Mars or Venus.

Formerly online edition “Teacher’s newspaper” toldthat more than a third of Russians are afraid to deal with robotic surgeons.
