“Peter von Kant”, the new film by François Ozon, will open the competition for the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival on February 10 at the Berlinale Palasta.
As the artistic director of the Berlinale Carlo Shatrian explains, for the opening ceremony, the management was looking for a film that could “bring light and life to our gloomy everyday life.” According to him, it is a theatrical tour de force on the themes of self-isolation, a free interpretation of Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s masterpiece The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant, 1972, but Ozone’s fantasy turned Petra into Peter, a filmmaker, played by Denis Menoche. In this figure, Ozone combined not only the melodies of the original film, but also the features of Fassbinder and even the elements of a self-portrait. The film also stars Isabelle Adjani and Hannah Shigulla.
This will be François Ozon’s sixth visit to the Berlinale. In 1999 he made his debut there with the film “Raindrops on Hot Rocks”. Twenty years ago, he received the Silver Bear “for the ensemble of the musical film” Eight Women “- this picture will also be shown at the upcoming Berlinale in honor of actress Isabelle Huppert. Another Silver Bear was awarded to the director two years ago for the film” The Grace of God “- documentary-based evil satire on rampant pedophilia in church chambers.
