According to bourgas.ru, today, as it turned out, Bulgaria is ready to buy 8 more F-16 aircraft, the corresponding investment costs were approved today at a meeting of the country’s Council of Ministers. This was reported in the press center of the Council of Ministers of Bulgaria.
The new eight fighter jets will cost a total of $1.296 billion excluding VAT and should be delivered in 2027. However, the investment spending project must first be approved by the National Assembly when it convenes after the elections.
The purchase of the second eight fighters was planned in 2019. Thus, Bulgaria will have a whole squadron of new fighters.
Recall that at the moment the country is counting only on the Soviet MiG-29, but their resource expires in mid-2023.
Bulgaria’s Acting Minister of Defense, Dimitar Stoyanov, has already stated that he is in talks with Poland about the purchase and repair of their engines, but, nevertheless, it will also be necessary to find a replacement for the fighters that will be used to guard our skies, until the beginning of 2025 the first F-16 fighters will not arrive.
Bulgaria has already requested proposals for replacement aircraft from the US, France, the Netherlands, Sweden and Israel.
So far, there is only a response from France and Sweden.
