Today it became known that the Bulgarian contender for the “Oscar” – the film in a foreign language “Mother” Zornitsa Sofia, was disqualified.

According to bourgas.ru, today it became known that the Bulgarian contender for the “Oscar” – the film in a foreign language “Mother” by Zornitsa Sofia, was disqualified. She herself announced this on social networks.

The reason is a violation of the regulations – the film has almost 3 minutes of English speech more than the allowable 50% for an “international film”. The very choice of the Bulgarian title was accompanied by a scandal.

In her post, Sofya Zornitsa also writes that nowhere on the Academy’s website is it explained exactly how someone else’s speech is measured, and after interviewing the film crew, they explained that this is done with “duration” – this is how two people from the production with two stopwatch measured speech – with about equal result.

The film “Mother” was selected for the Bulgarian nomination earlier this month by a special committee chaired this year by Bulgarian actress Maria Bakalova, who made her way into Hollywood.
