The average American home spends more than $2500 annually on their electric bill.

This is why many homeowners have taken the initiative to install solar panels to save money on their electric bills. Not to mention that solar panels are a great source of renewable energy.

But, like any other major home installation, it’s imperative to make sure you choose the right solar panels. The solar panel market presents a plethora of options.

So, read on to better understand the different kinds of solar panels and what is right for your home.

    Monocrystalline

Solar panels made of monocrystalline are the most efficient type of solar panels. Its efficiencies can reach up to 21 percent.

They are called monocrystalline solar panels because they are made with a single large crystal structure. Manufacturers cut single, long-grain crystals into smaller rectangular cells.

They then wire the cells together to form a working solar panel. These solar cells are black due to the type of materials and chemicals used in the manufacturing process.

Monocrystalline solar panels offer high efficiency. It will generate the most power in the same amount of space compared to other solar panel types.

They are also mechanically more robust and less susceptible to shading effects. The main downside to monocrystalline solar panels is their cost, which tends to be higher than other solar panels.

    Polycrystalline

Polycrystalline solar panels come from multiple crystals sharing the same space. Manufacturers make them by an ingot casting process using molten silicon. This results in less efficient solar panels as compared to monocrystalline solar panels.

Despite this, they are still a viable option for many homes and businesses. They tend to be less expensive than their monocrystalline cousins. They are more durable. And their unique blue hue makes them more aesthetically pleasing.

Additionally, they are better suited for areas with higher temperatures. No matter how hot the weather gets, their conversion rate remains consistent throughout the day.

Polycrystalline panels are also slightly more efficient when shaded. This makes them a great choice for rooftops where partial shading may occur.

    Thin Film

Thin film solar panels are photovoltaic technology constructed with thin layers of photovoltaic material. These materials then convert light into electrical energy. Compared to other traditional panels, they are lower in cost and use less material.

The panels also operate using either amorphous silicon or cadmium-telluride (CdTe). Amorphous silicon is more efficient than CdTe but is more expensive. CdTe thin-film solar panels are lighter in weight and can withstand higher operating temperatures.

They are less prone to damage from extreme weather conditions. These weather conditions could range from high winds and hail to extreme heat. Thin film solar panels are suitable for a variety of applications. This includes roof-mounted systems, ground-mounted systems, and solar trackers.

You can also integrate these thin film materials into building materials. This makes them suitable for wide use in both residential and commercial buildings.

Finally, thin-film technologies are more efficient per watt than conventional photovoltaics. This makes them an attractive option for those looking to maximize their solar energy production.

    PERC Solar Panels

PERC or Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell are designed to absorb more sunlight than other panels. PERC solar panels are more efficient than standard crystalline silicon and can gain more energy from the same amount of sunlight.

Their design also allows them to generate more electricity in low light and cloudy conditions. This makes them the ideal choice for households and businesses. They need less solar panel maintenance and have a longer life span, making them cost-efficient over time.

PERC solar cells also have a higher temperature tolerance than other kinds of solar cells. This allows them to operate in hotter climates, making them optimal for hotter countries.

    Portable Solar Panels

Hybrid panels combine different technologies to harvest energy from many sources. They usually have both crystalline silicon-based cells, as well as thin film cells. This type of hybrid technology improves their efficiency and power output compared to other solar panels.

The hybrid design also allows them to capture more sunlight than traditional panels. This then results in increased energy efficiency. They are also available in various sizes, making them perfect for any sized installation.

The downside is that hybrid solar panels are relatively more expensive than other panels. But their increased efficiency and power output make them a solid choice for a reliable and long-lasting solar energy system. It only depends on you if you are willing to invest in the technology.

    Portable Solar Panels

These solar panels are a great alternative to other types of solar panels, such as stationary panels or rooftop panels. They are lightweight, flexible, and easily movable. This makes them perfect for camping, RVing, and other outdoor activities.

Although the panels are relatively small in size, they are able to generate enough energy to power different small to medium devices. They use the same technology as other types of solar panels, but they are more lightweight and efficient.

Portable solar panels also need much less setup than other types of solar panels, as they need minimal mounting and wiring.

Which Kinds of Solar Panels Should You Get?

Now that you know about the different kinds of solar panels, it’s time to weigh the pros and cons. Only then can you decide which one you should get.

If you need more efficiency, mono-crystalline, PERC, and hybrid solar panels would be the best option. If you’re looking for the most viable and affordable option, then poly-, thin-film, or portable solar panels would be the way to go.

Consider your budget and energy needs. And when you do make a decision, see this link so you can start your solar panel journey.
