NATO expansion carries risks unacceptable for Russia – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

Moscow will resist attempts by the North Atlantic Alliance to expand its borders eastward. This process carries unacceptable risks, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said following a meeting of the Russia-NATO Council in Brussels.

He recalled that in 1997, when the parties signed the Founding Act and assured that “they do not regard each other as opponents,” only one country with a common border with the Russian Federation, Poland, asked to join NATO.

“Today many states have become members of NATO, and their territories are obviously used to project force in the direction of Russia from various geographic directions and into strategic depth,” the diplomat said. TASS
