Deputy Mayor of Riga admits that Russia will be able to take away the monument to the Liberators from Victory Park – Society – News of St. Petersburg

In Latvia, they consider it possible to transfer to Russia the monument to the Liberators, the demolition of which was decided by the authorities of Riga. Writes about this on May 14 Baltnews with reference to the vice-mayor of the Latvian capital Edward Smiltens.

“This (the transfer of the monument to Russia – ed.) is quite possible. I am not an expert on monuments, but as far as I understand, all the monuments that are removed are then sent to a special storage. And then it is already decided what to do with them further, ”Smiltens said on the air of the Latvian Radio.

As Fontanka wrote earlier, in Latvia the Seimas passed a law, allowing to dismantle the monument to the Liberators of Riga. The document suspends the bilateral agreement between Latvia and Russia on memorial structures and monuments.

The monument to the Liberators of Riga from Nazi invaders was opened in 1985. On May 9 of this year, a large number of people laid flowers at the monument, which were raked by a tractor the next day by public utilities. In response, city residents brought even more flowers, and the videos went viral on social media.
