Finnish President Niiniste says the country has officially decided to join NATO

Finnish President Sauli Niiniste said that the country has officially decided to join the NATO and apply for membership. Broadcast speeches by the head of state and prime minister Sanna Marin are conducted by the press service of the president.

On May 14, a telephone conversation took place between the President of Russia Vladimir Putin and Sauli Niiniste. Russian leader warned colleague that Finland’s refusal from the policy of military neutrality would be erroneous, since there are no threats to the country’s security. The head of state also noted that a change in Finland’s foreign policy could have a negative impact on relations with Russia.

On May 13, it became known that Finland will file application to join the North Atlantic Alliance next week, if approved by Parliament. Foreign Secretary Pekka Haavisto also added that Finland is ready for any situation in the border area with Russia.
