The CSU party said that the process of Ukraine’s entry into the EU could drag on for decades

Head of the Land Group of the Christian Social Union (CSU) in the German Bundestag Alexander Dobrindt advocated granting Ukraine the status of a candidate for membership in European Union (EU), however, stated that the process could be delayed. Timing it named newspaper Augsburger Allgemeine.

“If Ukraine wants to get the status of a candidate for EU membership, then we support it,” he said. At the same time, the politician noted that the process could “drag on for years and even decades,” since the EU does not have an accelerated procedure for admitting countries.

“Fundamental structural changes are often needed in a country to gain EU membership,” Dobrindt added.

May 12 at the French Foreign Ministry declaredthat Ukraine’s application for membership in the European Union (EU) will be considered at the association’s summit in June. Application is currently being considered European Commissionwill then be discussed at the level of Heads of State and Government in European Council.
