Lavrov to discuss with the Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan the conditions for the normalization of relations between Baku and Yerevan

Lavrov to discuss relations between Baku and Yerevan with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister

One of the main topics on the agenda of the meeting will be the conditions for the normalization of relations between Baku and Yerevan and prospects for a peace treaty between them. According to Lavrov, Russia is ready to contribute to this process in every possible way and notes the readiness of the parties for dialogue. “By the way, we heard the readiness of the Armenian side, the Prime Minister [Армении Никола] Pashinyan to negotiate on this topic. Here, too, we are ready to assist with the consent Azerbaijan and Armenia,” the minister said at a meeting with Aliyev.

Chapter Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation also pointed out that Moscow is ready to provide advisory services in the work on the delimitation and demarcation of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, and also has “concrete proposals in this regard.” At the same time, Lavrov and Bayramov will discuss in detail other aspects of the implementation of the agreements between the leaders of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan on Karabakh dated November 9, 2020, January 11 and November 6, 2021.

In particular, within the framework of these agreements, a working group was formed to unblock economic and transport ties in the South Caucasus, co-chaired by the vice-premiers of the three countries. According to Moscow, this body is currently active and has made some progress. “It seems to me that we have a common understanding of how to solve the problem of organizing car traffic in the most comfortable way so as not to create any artificial obstacles. Russia will assist this work until a result is achieved,” Lavrov said. As noted on Smolenskaya Square on the eve of his visit to Baku, the parties are working towards agreeing on a package of specific infrastructure projects in this direction.

In addition to a number of regional and international subjects, the foreign ministers intend to consider the entire wide range of issues of bilateral relations at the upcoming talks. Thus, cooperation between Moscow and Baku reached a new level after the leaders of both countries signed a declaration on allied cooperation on February 22. It is noteworthy that this happened in the year when the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the states is celebrated. Ministers will have to consider practical steps to implement the provisions of the document.

In this regard, Aliyev highly appreciated the pace at which Russian-Azerbaijani ties are being strengthened. “I would like to express satisfaction with the development of political relations, constant dialogue at the highest level, the development of trade and economic ties, which also show good dynamics this year, developments in the transport, energy, and humanitarian sectors. It is easier to name those areas where we do not have close cooperation “, he noted. In turn, the Russian diplomatic department emphasized that Azerbaijan is an important partner and ally of Russia in the South Caucasus and the Caspian region, and the daily joint work of the states is built in the spirit of the traditions of friendship and good neighborliness.
