The ban on the import of goods into Kaliningrad region not included in the area of responsibility Lithuania, said President Gitanas Nauseda. According to him, this problem concerns European Union and Russia. Nauseda stressed that Vilnius does not impose sanctions against the Russian Federation, it only “complies with the rules” of the European Union.
Lithuania does not impose sanctions on its part, we simply comply with EU rules, apply sanctions in accordance with these rules, Nauseda said.
Formerly EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said that the European Union does not intend to block cargo traffic between the Kaliningrad region and Russia, said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell. According to him, the ban on the transit of a number of goods through Lithuania will prevent a possible circumvention of the EU sanctions restrictions.
Prior to that, the Governor of the Kaliningrad Region Anton Alikhanov announced that the transit of some goods going to the region through the territory of Lithuania will be stopped. The authorities of the region received a corresponding notification from the Lithuanian Railways. According to the governor, due to this ban, an urgent delivery of new ships to the Ust-Luga-Baltiysk ferry line will be required.
