On National Unity Day, November 4, 2022, the Konstantinovskaya Battery museum and exhibition complex in Sevastopol celebrated its first anniversary. Exactly five years ago, it opened its doors to visitors in a historical fortress carefully restored by the Russian Geographical Society.
The White Fortress on a narrow cape was built in the 19th century to protect the Sevastopol Bay from enemy ships. The formidable fortification has become a symbol of the hero city, a visual embodiment of the glorious history and traditions of the Russian fleet, a reminder of the exploits of Russian soldiers and sailors. Now the citadel is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Sevastopol.
The restoration of the Konstantinovskaya battery is a special project of the Russian Geographical Society. Restoration work was carried out according to old drawings provided by the Central Archive of the Russian Navy in St. Petersburg. You can make an exciting virtual tour of the fortress on a special portal Russian Geographical Society.
“Here, every stone keeps the memory of the great works of our geographers, explorers and the heroic battles of Russian soldiers,” emphasized the President of the Russian Geographical Society Sergey Shoigu, personally conducting a tour of the Konstantinovskaya battery for journalists in 2018.
Over the past five years, the museum’s funds have been replenished with new exhibits. In addition to the main exposition, thematic exhibitions are regularly opened in the exhibition halls: “Russian Space”, “Sevastopol. A Legend in the Lens”, “Oceans of the Barque Sedov” and others.
— When we opened the museum, there was not yet that visual diversity, expeditionary trophies and author’s models that today allow guests to immerse themselves in the history of the hero city, the fortress and the Russian Geographical Society, — noted the head of the museum complex Vladimir Vorobyov.
The year 2022 is remarkable not only for the anniversary of the Konstantinovskaya Battery museum complex, but also for the 250th anniversary of the appearance of the first coastal fortifications in the Sevastopol Bay. On November 4, in honor of two significant anniversaries, a photo exhibition “Interaction of the Sevastopol city branch of the Russian Geographical Society with the Black Sea Fleet” was opened. Its exposition includes historical footage of the celebration of the 175th anniversary of the Russian Geographical Society and the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica, photographs from expeditions, from youth and sports events, Geographical dictations of different years and other significant events.
As part of the celebration of the Day of National Unity and the fifth anniversary of the opening of the museum, celebrations were held on Konstantinovsky Battery Square, in which representatives of the government and the Legislative Assembly of Sevastopol, sailors of the Black Sea Fleet, honored guests and members of public organizations took part. Among those invited to the ceremony were cabin boys of the 32nd naval crew of the Mercury brig.
According to tradition, to the sounds of the Black Sea Fleet orchestra, the participants of the festive events laid flowers at the mass grave of the defenders of the Konstantinovskaya Battery. A monument in memory of the feat of Russian soldiers during the heroic defense of Sevastopol in 1942 was erected in the courtyard of the fort.
– This year is significant: we have shown the whole world that we never abandon our brothers and are always ready to defend the interests of the country. So in this place, during the first and second defenses of Sevastopol, its defenders showed true courage and heroism and brought the common victory closer with their feat. Museum “Konstantinov Battery” carries the memory of the feat of our people to future generations. I sincerely congratulate the entire staff of the complex on the first small anniversary. I wish you success, development and implementation of any planned projects, – Chairman of the Legislative Assembly of Sevastopol Vladimir Nemtsev said at the ceremony.
Alexey Parikin, Deputy Chairman of the Government of Sevastopol, noted the tremendous work done by the Russian Geographical Society in creating a grandiose museum in the Konstantinovsky Battery.
– The spirit of patriotism that we instill in schools and kindergartens comes from this glorious land, Parikin emphasized.
The head of the military-political department of the Black Sea Fleet and a member of the Naval Board of the Sevastopol city branch of the Russian Geographical Society, Vyacheslav Vitold, recalled that we are all united by love for the Motherland and the desire to see it as a great and prosperous country.
– So, from a dilapidated military facility, the Konstantinovskaya Battery turned into a modern museum, one of the hallmarks of Sevastopol. Today, the headquarters of the Russian Geographical Society in Sevastopol is located here, a gathering place for like-minded people, patriots of Russia, a platform for preserving the historical memory of our people. We appreciate it and are always glad to cooperate. We wish prosperity, replenishment of the museum with new interesting exhibits and the implementation of all the tasks set, – Witold added.
According to the chairman of the Sevastopol city branch of the Russian Geographical Society, Vladimir Vorobyov, now the battery is actively visited by tourists and local residents, participants in various conferences, youth projects, including movie stars and famous scientists.
– In just five years, the museum was visited by about 200 thousand people. Due to the fact that the Headquarters of the Russian Geographical Society is located here, we can comprehensively organize joint events. Last Sunday, we hosted participants in the Geographical Dictation at the site of the museum and exhibition complex. And much more to come, assured Vladimir Vorobyov.
The solemn event at the Konstantinovskaya Battery Museum and Exhibition Complex was held in accordance with the Work Plan of the Russian Geographical Society for 2022.
