Deputy Director of the Department for Non-Proliferation and Arms Control of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Igor Vishnevetsky said that the actions of the Russian Armed Forces in Ukraine do not threaten nuclear security. At the same time, the diplomat allowed provocations at the nuclear facilities of Ukraine.

The representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry indicated that the Russian military guarded nuclear stations located in Ukraine in order to prevent their use by “nationalist Ukrainian formations, as well as foreign mercenaries.” The diplomat believes that such risks exist, reports RIA Novosti on Thursday, the fourth of August.

According to Igor Vishnevetsky, Russia was ready to provide the IAEA visit to the Zaporozhye NPP. The IAEA Secretariat, according to the diplomat, refused to organize this trip.

In July, IAEA representatives expressed their desire to visit the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, however, Ukraine opposed this visit. Zaporozhye nuclear power plant is under the protection of the military of the Russian Federation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia emphasized the justification of this decision from the point of view of preventing leaks of radioactive and nuclear materials.
