The Ministry of Internal Affairs explained the frequency of accidents with electric scooters

The sudden appearance on the road of personal mobility aids (IMs), including electric scooters, and low visibility in the traffic flow are the causes of half of the accidents with their participation. This was announced on Sunday, May 15, at the Scientific Center for Road Safety of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.

The review of the department says that the main participants in accidents with electric scooters are young people. 76% of traffic accidents involving IMS and 55% of those killed in them were registered during daylight hours. At the same time, 43% of victims in such accidents are people from 20 to 34 years old, reports TASS.

In 2021, there were 672 accidents involving personal mobility equipment, which is almost 68% more than a year earlier. 20 people died, 704 people were injured. This is 185.7% and 67% higher than in 2020.

The review notes that “the number of victims increases as their age increases.” “Starting from the age of 35, the number of victims drops sharply and then decreases as the age increases. In total, 28.7% of the total number of victims are aged 35 years and over.

Earlier, the Ministry of Internal Affairs said that determining the legal status of personal mobility aids (SIMs), including electric scooters, is difficult due to a number of factors. Among them – unpreparedness for the emergence of a new category of road users road network of most settlements.
