The name of the famous scientist, full member of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society Nikolai Danilevsky was assigned to the central library of Slavyansk-on-Kuban. This decision was made by the council of the municipality within the framework of the Russian Geographical Society project.
In 2022, the Russian Geographical Society is implementing a project to assign cultural and educational institutions the names of outstanding compatriots – members of the Russian Geographical Society, pioneers, travelers, geographers who have made a significant contribution to the development of the country, geography and related sciences. The project, aimed at popularizing geographical achievements, aroused great interest in various regions of the Russian Federation. In the Apsheronsky district of the Krasnodar Territory, the name of Nikolai Vavilov was given to the Children’s Ecological and Biological Center, the name of Nikolai Przhevalsky was given to the House of Children’s and Youth Tourism and Excursions. We also received support for the initiative to name Peter Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky to school No. 4 in the city of Chaplygin in the Lipetsk region and Georgy Ushakov to a school in the village of Lazarevo in the Jewish Autonomous Region.
The Slavyansk regional branch of the Russian Geographical Society became one of the first participants in the project in the Krasnodar Territory. The head of the department, Dmitry Reshmet, noted that the personality of the sociologist, publicist and naturalist, one of the founders of the civilizational approach to the history of Nikolai Yakovlevich Danilevsky, whose 200th birthday is celebrated this year, is in many ways a landmark for the Slavyansky district.
– This scientist owns the fundamental work “Research on the Kuban Delta”, which analyzes and describes in detail the hydrography of the territory of the present Slavyansk region. The staff of the library and the administration of the Slavyansk region actively supported the proposal of the Russian Geographical Society. We have already started working on the creation of a special stand dedicated to Danilevsky and a memorial plaque that will be installed on the library building — added Dmitry Reshmet.
The Slavic Intersettlement Library is a public platform of the regional branch of the Russian Geographical Society. In 2022, the film lecture hall of the Russian Geographical Society was opened here, more than 20 screenings of films from the Golden Fund of the Russian Geographical Society were organized, lectures and educational events were held for the youth of the region. The library is an active participant in many projects of the Russian Geographical Society. Its fund was replenished with books published by the Society, the exhibitions “The Most Beautiful Country” and “Rediscovering Russia Again! Together with the Russian Geographical Society” were held in its building.
