The project of the Russian Geographical Society “The World Around” entered the award shortlist “For fidelity to science” in the nomination “Ecological education”. The award was established as part of the Decade of Science and Technology announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“The world“is a project of the Russian Geographical Society aimed at involving volunteers in scientific research. It includes two areas: observing seasonal changes in nature and collecting field materials for research.
Materials collected by volunteers help scientists expand the database and make research results more accurate. In turn, the project participant gets the opportunity to discover the “kitchen” of natural processes, systematize the phenomena occurring in it and become part of the scientific process himself.
Observations of seasonal phenomena in Russia have been conducted for more than 170 years. In 1848, the Russian Geographical Society created the first observation program for amateur naturalists. In pre-revolutionary Russia, phenological observations were carried out by representatives of all social strata: peasants, teachers, doctors, high school students, enthusiasts, and officials.
The tradition of voluntary observations was continued in Soviet times. The number of observation points reached several thousand. Nature calendars, collections of articles were compiled and published, volunteer observers and specialists exchanged experience at annual conferences.
Currently, phenological observations are gaining more and more popularity. Projects and competitions are being created in which everyone can take part. Thousands of schoolchildren and students enthusiastically observe the nature of their native land. The collected data become a valuable tool in the work of scientists.
Since 2022, within the framework of the “World Around the World” project, observational materials for research have been collected. The researcher can leave a request to collect the necessary material, and any interested person, whether a scientist or a volunteer, can see the request and provide what is required for research. Or, on the contrary, you can offer your help in collecting material.
Award “For fidelity to science” has been awarded since 2015 for outstanding achievements in science communication and popularization of science. It is organized by the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, the partners of the event are the Russian Academy of Sciences, the National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute” and the Lomonosov Moscow State University. For more than five years in a row, the award has been supported by the Art, Science and Sport Charitable Foundation.
