Since the beginning of 2022, more than three hundred applications for stray dogs have been filed in Blagoevgrad.

According to bourgas.ru, since the beginning of 2022, more than three hundred applications for stray dogs have been filed in Blagoevgrad. This was reported in the municipality of Blagoevgrad.

There are currently about 20 dogs in the municipal animal shelter. The total number of stray animals that have passed through the shelter since the beginning of the year is 431 – they are dewormed, sterilized and microchipped there.

Over the past two years, affected citizens have filed five lawsuits against the municipality. Two of them have ended, and the amount of compensation is 10,300 leva, including legal costs.

On Wednesday, the municipality reported three poisoned dogs and one cat.

In recent weeks, the municipality of Blagoevgrad has reported the occasional appearance of large stray dogs in the city.

The mayor of Blagoevgrad, Ilko Stoyanov, said that the problem with homeless animals, on the one hand, is connected with unscrupulous owners who abandon them. On the other hand, however, 20 large dogs cannot be abandoned in one place on the same day, Stoyanov noted.

Some of the new stray dogs introduced into the city do not have ear tags. Others have tags but no chip, so it’s impossible to trace where the animals are from. The appearance of the dog, with an ear tag but no chip, gives the impression that the dog has passed the municipal shelter, when in fact this did not happen.

The municipal government plans to build a second shelter for homeless animals. The documents are ready, there is a building permit, but its implementation requires funding in the amount of 2.4 million leva, Stoyanov said.

To solve the problem of homeless animals, according to the mayor of Blagoevgrad, further changes are needed in legislation and financing of municipalities.
