The Russian video game market will reach RUB 186.5 billion by 2025. According to analysts from PwC, it will grow by an average of 5% per year.
Experts believe that Russian developers of games for smartphones will continue to strengthen their positions in the international market – by the end of 2021, Playrix rose to the second place in terms of revenue among publishers of mobile games. And the company’s most popular game since 2016 has earned its creator $ 3 billion.
Analysts note that VK (formerly Mail.ru Group), which owns the gaming division of MY.GAMES, remains the most active player in the video game market in Russia. For example, in 2021, MY.GAMES acquired the Playkey cloud gaming service and, together with Google, opened a fund of $ 30 million for mobile game developers.
Other players are also entering the Russian video game market. At the end of 2020, SberGames presented its service for cloud games, and in April 2021 it launched SberGames. Analysts suggest that investments in this area could amount to $ 100 million. In addition to Sber, Svyaznoy also entered the video game market – the company created a subsidiary brand for the sale of gaming devices, software and subscriptions to gaming services.
The forecast is quite realistic, the market should start growing again after stagnation in 2021, which was caused by the abnormal growth of 2020, believes Yaroslav Meshalkin, director of strategic communications at ESforce Holding. “First of all, we expect growth in the mobile segment – this is the main driver of development in both gaming and e-sports. In addition, there will be more Hollywood stars in video games – recent years have shown that there is a demand for such collaborations, and it can turn out to be very successful (for example, collaboration between publishers Cyberpunk 2077 and Keanu Reeves) In fact, video games are becoming the new interactive cinema, so there must be stars there – both those who appeared within the game universes and those who came from related areas of show business. “
The Russian market will reach these figures faster – a year or two earlier, and by 2025 it will surpass the level of 200 billion rubles, says Vasily Maguryan, head of MY.GAMES. “This will be possible due to several factors. First, the PC segment will grow due to new releases and cloud gaming technologies, which we support and actively develop through our MY.GAMES Cloud service. Second, the market remains the fastest growing segment. mobile games – it will continue to grow thanks to the availability of titles, better monetization tools and significant improvements in the quality of new projects. The console market will grow slowest due to high prices for games and supply problems of next-generation consoles caused by the ongoing semiconductor crisis. “
Ilya Ovcharenko, the ex-head of the All-Russian State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company, agrees with Maguryan. “The Russian video game market can indeed reach 200 billion rubles by 2025,” he believes.
