The population census of the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) indicates that in Colombia there are 7,128,979 children between the ages of 3 and 11, of which, as of January 9, 3,235,239, that is, 45%, have received their first dose against covid-19 and 1,224,223, which is equivalent to 17.2%, have already completed schemes. However, 3,893,740 people who are part of this population are susceptible to vaccination.
“Vaccination is the most cost-effective global measure in public health; at the individual level, it reduces the risk of getting sick and dying from diseases that are preventable by vaccines, and at the collective level, it contributes to their eradication. Elimination and control of these diseases,” he stated. Gerson Bermont, director of Promotion and Prevention of the Ministry of Health.
The Colombian vaccination scheme, covered by the Expanded Immunization Program (PAI), has 21 vaccines that protect against 26 diseases that are administered at the different vaccination points in the country. The first vaccine is applied to the newborn in the first 12 hours of life and the vaccination schedule continues until adulthood.
