Tu-160M missile carrier built from scratch made its first flight – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

The revived “White Swan” made its first flight.

A historic event for the Russian aviation industry took place in the capital of Tatarstan. The first newly built strategic bomber Tu-160M took off from the airfield of the Kazan Aviation Plant (Tupolev branch, part of the UAC in Rostec), the press service of the state corporation reported.

The flight took place at an altitude of 600 meters for about 30 minutes. The test pilot crew performed maneuvers to check the stability and controllability of the aircraft in the air.

Recall that the legendary “White Swans” began to be produced in the early 1980s. In total, they managed to build eight missile carriers, and then the Soviet Union collapsed. In post-Soviet Russia, for a long time they could not even think about creating such giants – they would keep the old planes. And only in 2018, the President of the country decided to revive the production of Tu-160, and in a modernized version.

A state contract was concluded between the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia and PJSC “Tupolev” and in the shortest possible time the design documentation for the aircraft was digitized, the technology of vacuum welding of titanium products was restored, and the production of airframe units was resumed.

As the Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Denis Manturov explained, the full production cycle of the Tu-160 was restored, but with the use of modernized engines, navigation and weapons control systems.

For the construction of the missile carrier, it was necessary to modernize the Kazan Aviation Plant itself. Here the equipment of the shops, the flight test base were updated, the world’s largest installation for electron beam welding and vacuum annealing of titanium was launched.

“The Tu-160 is one of the most ambitious and high-tech projects in the aviation industry. The implementation of this program required not only the renovation of production facilities, but also the creation of a fundamentally new digital environment for working on the project. The fundamental importance of today’s event is that the new aircraft has been completely rebuilt. from scratch, – emphasized the general director of UAC Yuri Slyusar. – The systems and equipment in the new car have been updated and modernized by 80 percent. “
