Coronavirus is gradually becoming endemic – that is, common in a community of people or a specific region. This was stated by the head of the technical group of the emergency diseases unit of the World Health Organization (WHO) Maria van Kerkhove. However, according to her, until this happened, the world is approximately in the middle of a pandemic.
“This virus is on its way to becoming endemic. It is not even disputed. But now we are in the middle of this pandemic, and the level of spread, its intensity, as well as the level of influence of new infections on key medical services, hospitalization rates are very significant … So the virus on the way to becoming endemic, but we have not yet come to this “, – the words of the WHO representative RIA News…
Van Kerkhove noted that the virus continues to evolve. She did not rule out that “omicron”, most likely, will not be the last strain in this chain. “We have an element of unpredictability. We do not have the predictability that flu has, with typical seasonal diseases. But we may come to this,” the expert added.
It also emphasizes that the coronavirus cannot become habitual for a particular country, while the pandemic will continue in other countries.
Formerly director of the Gamaleya Center Alexander Gunzburg reportedthat today about 30% of cases of coronavirus infections in Moscow are accounted for by the new omicron strain.
