The World Health Organization is calling an emergency meeting over the South African strain of the coronavirus. About it informs Financial Times and CNBC

The meeting will take place on Friday to discuss variant B.1.1.529.

WHO experts will discuss whether this option should be considered “of concern”.

Director of the Center for Innovation and Epidemic Response in South Africa Tulio de Oliveira told the FT that he discussed the new strain with WHO staff this week, who decided to call an emergency meeting. De Oliveira estimates that about 90% of new cases in South Africa’s Gauteng province, which includes Johannesburg, were caused by the new variant.
