During the prophylactic week of reducing the consumption of table salt, Galina Zakharova, a general practitioner at the Nenets District Hospital, spoke about the benefits and harms of table salt in the diet.

– Salt is necessary for a person as well as for any other living being. It restores the water-salt and acid-base balance in the body, normalizes the level of gastric juice, is a natural antibiotic that destroys bacteria in foods. At the same time, excessive salt intake increases blood pressure, which increases the risk of diseases of the cardiovascular system and their complications – heart attack, stroke, vascular dementia, retinopathy or sudden death, – said Galina Zakharova.

According to the specialist, the physiological norm of salt intake per day for an adult is 5 grams – this is about 1 teaspoon. This is how much the body needs to maintain the water-mineral balance, conduct nerve impulses and work the muscles.

“Many people go way beyond this limit. On average, according to Rospotrebnadzor, Russian women eat almost 10 grams of salt daily, and men eat even more. This is one of the reasons for the development of hypertension, heart disease, kidney and joint problems. Therefore, it is important to control the amount of salt consumed and it is better to give preference to iodized salt – it will bring more benefits to the body, – said the therapist.

Iodized salt is common table salt (sodium chloride) that has been supplemented with potassium iodide or iodate.

— Iodine is an important chemical element that is necessary for healthy human life. Each person should receive at least 150 micrograms of iodine per day – this need for iodine can be easily met by replacing ordinary salt with iodized salt in your diet. Iodine contributes to the prevention of endocrine disorders and diseases of the nervous system of newborns and young children, Galina Zakharova explained.

The specialist noted that salt is a necessary component for the healthy life of the human body and brings a positive effect only if the norms of salt consumption are observed.

It has been found that limiting salt to just 2 to 2.5 grams (1/2 teaspoon per day) reduces the risk of strokes, heart attacks and heart failure by a third.
